Most basic food items are zero-rated for VAT, but there are important exceptions. Hot food, food eaten on the premises, and certain snacks and confectionery are standard-rated at 20%. For hospitality businesses, the distinction between eat-in and takeaway sales is critical for VAT purposes. Getting this wrong is a common cause of VAT investigations.
