The Construction Industry Scheme (CIS) requires contractors to deduct money from subcontractor payments and pass it to HMRC as an advance payment towards the subcontractor’s tax and NI. Deductions are 20% for registered subcontractors and 30% for unregistered ones. CIS applies to construction work including building, demolition, repairs, and installation. Both contractors and subcontractors must register with HMRC.
